Influenza Epidemic News Update (2007-10-16)
Zhong Nanshan, a renowned medical expert and academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, warned in this month that the flu virus will drift that the bird flu would more likely tend to attack human.
Mr. Zhong stated that the flu virus strain, named as Luo Hu, is current spreading in Guangdong. It is a variation of influenza A (Solomon Island type) and slightly different with the WHO recommended vaccine strains. However the flu vaccine (Fluarix) will still be effective to prevent influenza.
WHO recommended vaccine strains are:
- The Solomon Islands (H1N1)
- The Wisconsin (H3N2)
- The Malaysia of influenza B
He also said that in the past statistics, flu epidemic was often peaked in Mar/Apr. Therefore, from this month to December, it is the best time to take a flu shot. There are four groups of people which are most venerable, and a flu shot is strongly recommended. They are:
- Elderly over than 60,
- Children,
- Heart/lung problem or diabetes patients,
- Medical staffs.
